SAAB Sonett II: Saab's first production sports car

At this year's special show for the 60 anniversary of the Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (VDIK) during the AMI in Leipzig, a Saab Sonett from the second series represents the brand from Trollhättan. Time to take a closer look at the brand's first production sports car from Sweden. After the Sonnet I, only 6 pieces were built by it, came with the small coupe the first sports car in mass production.

Originally equipped with a 3-cylinder two-stroke engine, the V1967 from Ford was introduced under the GRP hood as early as 1968 and 4. In the 4 years of construction, 258 vehicles with three-cylinder engines and 1610 vehicles with V4 engines were produced.

My automobile career began in very tender years with the Ford V4. Our first family car was Ford 12 M P4 with V4 engine. From the experiences of the childhood days with me the Cologne engine was classified as reliable, but boring.

Many, many years later I had my first experience with a sonnet. The Sonett is lightweight compared to the Ford. 200 kilograms less than in the sedan allow the 65 hp to take on new dynamics. The background noise does the rest. From a purely subjective point of view, one would like to say that the Sonett is a sports car. Hard, loud, tight, something for the heart. An eye-catcher in every situation, because the small sports car is difficult to classify.

For the special show in the Saxon metropolis, the sonnet is a good choice. The visitors should look. A Saab 96 or a classic 900 are almost too popular and are immediately classified as Saab. The sonnet is an exotic in the exhibition of classic automobiles. What car is that ? A Saab? Yes, a Saab. Because Saab builds and above all sports cars.

It was like that back in 1966. The Sonett was also an image product to make the Trollhättan brand more attractive for drivers of sporty cars. However, they had to be tough. In summer the sporty Saab is a mobile sauna. The generous glazing at the rear ensures that the interior is heated up quickly. Actually, everything at Saab was thought a little differently back then, and the thing with the sonnet should have gone in a different direction. But then there were misunderstandings, compromises and wrong decisions. The Origin of the Sonnet is a Swedish crime thriller set in the 60s. The story behind it reads excitingly and will be told tomorrow.

No matter what, the fans today love the sports coupé from Trollhättan. Most of Sonett II went across the pond to the United States. From there they will be brought back to “Good-Old-Europe” today. Lovingly restored, they are the eye-catcher at every Saab meeting. A sonnet is also a safe investment. The low production number has been causing prices to rise for years. Not very fast, not spectacular, but sure. Just like the acceleration times of the little athlete, who subjectively feels fast, but is not by today's standards. Because in a leisurely 12 seconds it goes with a great soundscape from 0-100.

Even with over 40 years, the sonnet shown at the AMI is still active at sporting events. The sports coupé is part of the Saab Classic fleet of mobile forum in Dresden, where Saab tradition is still maintained, and was loaned to the German branch of Saab Parts AB for the duration of the event.

    Hasn't the time now come to send a letter to Hans Bergqvist & Co., as the highest authority of the SAAB community Germany, with the request that the highest bid be accepted?

    The process seems a bit strange, especially in the last few weeks - example: Adding a consortium with insufficient bids after the deadline for bids to be submitted has expired.

    If the reason was to lure other bidders out of the reserve, that seems to have worked for Youngman. Then you should finally give the contract or at least give some concrete information about the state of things. Exclusive secrecy is known to be more of a disadvantage and brings the so-called rumor mill only unnecessarily to simmer!

    a small correction, from the first sonnet were built 6 copies, not 4.
