For this reason, the 9-5 is a collector's item - right from the start. Many vehicles are in the hands of fans who want to drive their Swedes for as long as possible. The topic of Saab 9-5 NG and rust is needed, because the manufacturer has only done the bare minimum when it comes to rust protection. Probably the little miracle of even getting these vehicles on the streets was enough. More miracles ex works is probably not possible; we have to take care of rust prevention ourselves.

The result is due to the Swedish conditions, but looks more tragic in the pictures than it is. Of course you could continue the Saab without doing anything. Only at some point it will be really bad, and what is now surface rust, that will be bad caries in a few years. Since the Saab is somehow dear to my heart, we opt for the big operation to be able to travel for many years without fear of the brown plague.
After taking stock, in the second step the cover layers on the subfloor are removed, the vehicle is de-rusted and the exposed body parts are degreased. Then a double primer with rust converter, and it is applied a new topcoat.
Because the look also plays a role, the chassis parts and beams are painted black, the other body parts painted in the same color as the vehicle. In the next work process, the new underbody seal is applied, and wheel arches, support frames and chassis parts are also protected. Our Saab has underbody protection that couldn't be better.
The wheel arches on the Saab 9-5 NG are an issue in themselves and can be warmly recommended as a precautionary measure. An unfortunate crease between the sheet metal and the inner mudguard collects dirt and moisture, and with it the mudguards mutate to the classic candidate for perforation. The rear inner wings usually do not close tightly; There seems to have been an assembly problem. Water penetrates into the trunk. Whether the Saab is dense or not, can be found in an inspection of the spare wheel well. All these are problems of the small series, a short production phase, lack of facelift. Not bad, if you can react accordingly.
Back to rust prevention in Bamberg. We are almost there. This is followed by the cavity sealing of doors, beams and other cavities. The 9-5 is finally cleaned, rust will not be an issue so soon.
Is the 9-5 more prone to rust than other, comparable brands? I do not think so. My vehicle comes from Sweden, the local requirements are higher than in our region. Nevertheless, or maybe because of that, one could have assumed that Saab would invest more in rust protection. But this was not so. We should probably be grateful to Victor Muller for getting the Saab 9-5 into production in the first place.
Okay, okay, let's talk about money. For a week the Saab in Upper Franconia was what I think was a sensible investment. The inventory and the underbody sealing cost around € 600,00, the cavity sealing € 350,00. Rust removal, priming, painting, the really big program, depends on the effort. The prices vary depending on the state. It's not cheap.
But the extended rust prevention is definitely recommended if you want to use the 9-5 in the long term.
