Is Volvo the Saab alternative? (Survey & reload ...)

To say it in advance: There are no plans to rename the project in Saab-Volvo Blog! Nevertheless, the result of the survey was astonishing. If the blog had asked the same question a year ago, the result would have been different.

Volvo as Saab alternative?
Volvo as Saab alternative?

Volvo as an alternative would have been judged more cautiously a year ago. What has changed since summer 2014? Has Volvo suddenly become more attractive? Letters from readers who are at home in both the Volvo and the Saab warehouse report that the facelift has been successful and that the new generation of engines has been well received. But that's not all. The reason for the good result, because now almost every second reader on the blog sees an alternative in the Göteborg brand, located a few kilometers up the Göta Älv. In Trollhättan.

Is Volvo the Saab alternative?

  • An alternative in any case! (47% 258 Votes)
  • Once Saab, always Saab. Who is talking about Volvo? (31% 174 Votes)
  • No idea. I'm undecided ... (13% 72 Votes)
  • The alternatives do not come from Sweden! (9% 50 Votes)

Total Voters: 554

Or rather, at NEVS. At the beginning of 2014 there was still hope - the new edition of the Saab 9-3 and its possible availability in Germany were within reach. Then came the disenchantment in early summer. The following months, the company that keeps the Saab production facility occupied survived, mostly with taxpayers' money. Mattias Bergman's troop has not been on the radar since then, and trust has fallen. The result of these events shows the survey on the blog.

Saab drivers are an extremely loyal people. That 31% for "Once Saab, always Saab”Agreed is a good value. But the fact that almost 50% of the readers and Saab pilots in the competitor see the Göta Canal as an alternative is a strong announcement. That should make you think! On the one hand NEVS. The company reads along here and comments from time to time. 50% of possible customers on the go, Saab only as a hobby in the best case ... the alarm bells should ring. The break can be felt. Those who have migrated may cultivate their old Saab as sentimentality. Something new from NEVS, should it bear the Saab logo, you don't have to find it good despite all the affinity to the brand.

If NEVS has a serious plan for the brand's comeback in any drawer, then it would be time to develop action. Life is entertainment. Not the silence of Trollhättan!

Workshops that have Saab as a business model certainly found the discussion and coordination interesting. The result could be food for thought. If half of the customer base sees an alternative in Volvo, then it would be an option to expand the offer with a Volvo service contract. Classic Saab, new Volvos, satisfied customers. Why not ? It couldn't be more Swedish, and if the audience is obviously taking the path, some Saab workshops could seriously think about it.

What does the result say for the blog? No, a Volvo is not on my shopping list. We are happy with our Saabs, apart from minor transport problems during the holiday season ... We have given our vehicles extensive rust protection measures, the technology is somehow kept running. Saab 9-5 and 9-3 will still look good in years to come, road fun is guaranteed anyway.

As announced, we will start a Saab-Volvo experiment on the blog in autumn. Depending on how our readers accept the attempt, a Volvo could end up in the coverage from time to time. That would be an option, an additional offer. No shift in focus.

But what I would prefer would be if the Trollhättan brand somehow continued. A miracle, somehow, from somewhere. That would be time. Honest…

I follow the news for e-cars: Audi is planning an e-SUV! Why only always SUV? I do not understand that. What does “normalo” want with such a superfluous bullet in the city? Do you feel so superior and strong at it? Or to show what you have (or the financing bank) or what is technically possible?
Just build a reasonable, normal sized, interior convertible car.
The occupational groups that need such a tank, but are counted on one hand; So if the forester drives one, because all his fingers have
But overall nice that many automakers want to emulate Tesla and (of course) want to show more range….
and coincidentally comes out Porsche and maybe NEVS end 2017 with an electric car.

Honestly, I am very happy that Tom is not a Volvo on the shopping list! This is just a confirmation for me, because in the second car procurement, to save my Saab, the brand came with me also out of the question. Not for Ungut Dear Volvo owner, I appreciate the brand, but there is no spark in my head, neither in design nor in driving. My dad had several of these cars, he is a convinced Volvo fan. By the way, by the way, I do not think much of the design of the new XC 90. Unfortunately, here Volvo follows the path taken by Audi with the Q7 and similar cars.

We all live in the “here and now”.
Since we both rely on a vehicle for work, we have separated from our two Saab vehicles. That was really not easy emotionally. And my gaze hangs on every passing Saab.
Our decision fell on Subaru. A small fine car maker with amazingly good engines and a super four-wheel drive. The Forester XT is really fun.

I'm not surprised by the result! I am rather surprised that after so long time so many fans are on the pole. This is unique! And from my amateur point of view, I'm speechless about that that is not recognized and an investor seizes the opportunity!

    • blank

There aren't that many fans anymore, there are a lot of network-savvy fans at saabblog.net (where else?). In the next few years, the number of Saab vehicles on our streets will move significantly downwards, the main number of the 9-3, 9-5 I, etc., judging by their condition, are not enthusiast vehicles either. As long as the spare parts supply still works, nothing is a problem, but sooner or later most of the really beautiful vehicles (no matter how old) will no longer be used in everyday life. It's sad for sure, but if you take off the fan glasses it's (unfortunately) a completely normal process. Who still remembers the major German electrical appliance manufacturers? World-class brands have simply disappeared and now almost forgotten ...

…… ..very realistic and thoughtful contribution, as are the other opinions!
Many quotes would be appropriate here, I post only one:

“The following months survived the company that made the Saab
Keeps production facility occupied,…. Mattias Bergman hasn't had anyone since then
    more on the radar, "

The main responsibility lies in my opinion in the state itself, or unsuspecting
Courts and smart law firms. Someone said, theoretically, NEVS could too
Irons make, the main thing the region is on employment course! Or
Nails or pampers ... it doesn't matter.

They cheat out of a reconstruction until the next comparison, nobody thinks
knows what they want at all …… ..we are dealing with deaf mutes, apparently.
No interest in Saab customers, Saab workshops, Saab community …… .etc.

Do not know any brand, current or past, that
start, would encounter so much potential and ambition and cooperation ... ..think it would
in the country everything is bursting with joy and entrepreneurial spirit.

So let's leave the dull and indifferent Swedes aside ... I care for mine
Saabs until further notice ... I am with one eye on the small, sharp Volvo s60

I kept wondering what would be better, an old model of a manufacturing factory
to drive or a model of a dead work? In the first case you heard “he can get one
new model cannot afford ”and in the second“ it has stopped in time and space ”.

Either I stay one of the last Mochicans, or I will someday before
a new Saabvertretung with blue slices as a facade, with my precious piece
    ancestors.

So I went with Lancia Flavia 2000 in dark blue. I drove up to Fiat and "thumbs up"
and "encouragement" came from all sides. Stole the show from the new ones and everyone
    second turned around

I wonder why they want to fill so many positions, currently on August 16 (see their website). What are they doing there? Or do the new employees get contracts from a certain date? And is this date also the big appearance of NEVS with an EV with a range greater than 300km? Very ominous, there's something going on….
Who is the big co-owner? You do not hear anything anymore

      • blank

On the 16./17. August ends the holidays at NEVS. The size of the new hires corresponds to a smaller engineering office. No reason to think about it. If NEVS even looks for a few hundred engineers, then you could do that.
One of the new co-owners (still unconfirmed in Sweden but in China fact) is Teamsun.

Saab service and Volvo new car sales is old hat, take a look to Vienenburg to Stephan. The two brands harmonize well under one roof. Who really needed to bring Kia into the house? Then dear Subaru!

Much to the Volvo models depends on the V70 successor. Swedes and Germans alike love this model. If it flops, then ...

NEVS will not release a Saab as we know it with 4 Cylinder Turbo. The future is purely electric, as has been pointed out several times. Since it takes so long, then the era of electric cars will have begun. I think the next decade is going to be over and NEVS might be there. Let's see, maybe there will be something interesting out of THN, if not it is not bad either.

Is not a well-known SAAB partner from a Hamburg suburb on the Kia and Subaru Trip?

In our family in the 80 years to the middle of 90 always drove Volvo, including wife. Then switched to Saab, both too. Now there is only one SAAB -932 convertible, because I needed a new vehicle professionally was the business car saddled to Mercedes lack of alternative. Would be nice if something new came from SAAB. Otherwise, the Saab will be retained and the Mercedes exchanged for Volvo or Tesla. Volvo has developed well and could be an alternative.

NEVS is responsible for the emigration itself. It would have been possible to bring the SAAB brand back onto the road with a hybrid model of the 9-3 including a new body, the refurbishment of the old 900 and conversion to fully electric (some 900 owners have done it). Only NEVS wanted / wants something else, which takes millions of euros and a long time….

We drive since 1992 (but not consistently) SAAB.
Between fall 2001 and fall 2006, we did not have one until I could not endure it as a 17 year old and bought 86iger 900i.
2012, we returned to SAAB with the purchase of a 2000er 9-3.
I can not and do not want to imagine another brand anymore.
No matter if there will be a new SAAB or not, we stay with SAAB.
Incidentally, our cars are not spared, but both dangers all year.

If there should be any more spare parts at some point I just hang the car driving on the nail.
As it looks in Monet, driving a car will at some point no longer be fun because the “driver” is only a passenger and the loudest noise on the car is the airstream.
This horror vision of the “mobile future” is guaranteed to take place without me.

Michael, I agree with you completely right. An outlook could be seen in the film I Robot when the car drove independently with the 5 rings and Will Smith had to intervene manually (after all?) When the robots attacked the car.

    Saab EV is best!

The new SUV XC 90 looks great. High quality, strong, superior. But actually hardly anyone needs it ... heavy, too big, superfluous. Volvo's overall appearance has become too slit-eyed for me. Sure: a little different from the others, but as with all things, it's a matter of taste. The Volvo station wagon V70 will soon no longer be built that way, it will also get a “hatchback”, just so that the cw value is correct and the consumption of 0,2 l is lowered ...
Volvo will be eliminated for me completely.
I drive next to my 9-3 Biopower as a second car a VW electro-up; I am totally excited about it and therefore wait for either the new Tesla Model III or a chic NEVS. The latter should also be in 2017! So, please build

I read here daily, for years. I like the restrained style and when Tom writes about NEVS and Volvo then there is only one explanation, NEVS is written off, the big plans of contract manufacturing and OEM development have (once again) burst.
I would not be surprised if the amateur troupe would close someday. Probably the best thing that could happen to SAAB.

    • blank

Specialists are constantly being hired on the NEVS website - this would not be the case if the company were about to close!

Whether it is plan B or plan B + (possibly later) plan A, I will wait calmly. In addition, you will still be confronted with SAAB on the NEVS website from the SAAB history to the last 9-3 - this would probably no longer be the case if the future alignment was to take place entirely without SAAB.

When it comes to Volvo, it occurs to me that the current Chinese owner had shown interest in the Trollhättan brand during the SAAB Spyker era - but that didn't work out. If I remember correctly, GM had a few pitfalls for SAAB ready.

Perhaps SAAB is currently moving back into focus as a second brand - as is well known, a collaboration between NEVS / SAAB + Volvo has been going on for some time.

I've been driving Saab since 1990. Currently 3 x 9-3 Aero in the stable and what then? The 9-5 nG - good models at moon prices ... Volvo has caught up with the XC 90 but is mainstream in the car segment ...
Well - if you don't want to become a standard BMWAUDIMERCEDES driver it is difficult!
    Possibly. Jaguar…

I like the pitch compared to NEWS: gets more direct / sharper!
Because WE are the potential SAAB customers!
We can find it gratifying what NEVS will produce one day ... but we don't have to! 😉 And the regular customers are gone. Loyalty to new customers is always much more difficult than caring for brand customers and enjoying new customers!
NEVS is off the table for me. Maintain my SAAB up to "engine damage", which hopefully will NEVER occur. What comes next will largely depend on my thoughts on mobility.
Bicycle, taxi, bus and train, possibly a rental car. “Obsessively” a car in the carport: no thanks.

I could well imagine SAAB & VOLVO at a dealer. For us SAAB is still pure passion, only at some point will everyday life catch up with us. A SAAB then stays in the family for the summer days - that's for sure. For everyday use a slightly smaller VOLVO (the XC90 is too big a caliber) why not. If there was also a competent contact point for both brands - that would be good.

  • blank

    Hi,

I've been driving SAAB for ages, and I still identify with philosophy and products. Nevertheless, fatigue also spreads to me. The world goes on and on and faster. After many company cars of SAAB and other brands, I landed at Volvo before 2 years ago. For a few days now I drive the new XC 90! Scandinavian, emotional (was always a Volvo problem in my view) chic and well thought out. A start button between the seats. Noble, quiet and a Volvo ratio beautiful and noble styling. Everything that SAAB has distinguished from Volvo so far, unites this Volvo in itself. It will be difficult to stand up and I would be delighted if SAAB (NEVS) were able to get me back to SAAB. Volvo raises the bar, not just for SAAB.
Volvo and SAAB dealer in one, I think that's a very good idea. I still maintain my oldies with the SAAB contractor and will continue to do so in the future. But it has become a hobby. Passion is there too. But without new TOP products this will be limited to that. Hopefully there will be some news from NEVS soon, otherwise it will be true, what the survey has shown here, if it is not already too late!

But we SAAB drivers are patient and capable of suffering.

    Best regards from Erik

The XC 90 is visually a force, congratulations! A direct question, how is it with the 4 cylinders? Is the engine sufficient or not enough? I do not like the local newspapers ;-)!

      • blank

Is enough! Very, very quiet! Powerful enough to get the ship moving. And economical. Soon there will be a small syringe from Volvo specialists, then it's perfect. Yes, he is tall. To 6. But there are hardly any nice and equivalent alternatives. I'm excited. As in the past from new SAAB models.

        • blank

Wow, sounds good! So not just visually a force! Always a good trip! Diesel or gasoline?

          • blank

Diesel, thanks for the good wishes.
