SAAB DNA… reload

Saab DNA is distributed all over the world. A startup started with Saab know-how and experienced a crash. Another committed a Saab designer and wants to make a big start now. And old Saab DNA gets a third facelift in China.

SAAB DNA

Based on the old Saab 9-5 generation, the Senova D70 gets a new front in Buick style. As a power source Saab Trionic works with the traditional 2 and 2.3 liter engines. In China, the former Swede is sold as a premium product and enjoys some popularity, also due to low prices.

BAIC unabashedly advertises Saab DNA. On the national website you can discover the Saab logo with turbocharger or integrated into the lightbar of the 9-5 NG. The term Nightpanel sprinkles in the eye, Saab advertising clips from China production are available. What was it like with intellectual property?

Borgward - Take off 1.0

Oh yes, Borgward ... what hopes we had because Einar Hareide is a former Saab designer. Hareide has delivered great design at Saab. The timeless, still beautiful 900 II and 9-3 I come partly from his pen. The design and premiere of the Borgward BX7 was more of a disappointment than a go-around. Saab DNA in the BX7 - Nothing. But Borgward is working hard to get off to a good start.

Europe was already on the list of continents to be conquered in 2017 ... with the BX7. It is coming, now it will be exciting, as a plug-in hybrid and as an EV. No conventional combustion engine will drive Borgwards European versions, this technology remains reserved for China and emerging countries. A consequence of Wolfsburg's Dieselgate says Borgward, and expects stricter environmental laws in the future.

And Borgward is thinking aloud about an assembly plant in Germany. Prefabricated cars from China, installation of batteries and drive trains in the old homeland. Bremen would be nice, maybe Daimler clears a hall in Sebaldsbrück.

Qoros - Go-ahead 2.0

Do we remember Qoros? Yes, there was something ... A lot Saab Know How met at the Israeli-Chinese joint venture. It seemed that big plans could work out ... Best results in the NCAP crash test, rapid expansion to Europe. The Swedish press saw a lot of Saab DNA at Qoros. Especially the media, which Saab never liked.

Advance praise. Crash. The largest part of Saabians is back in Europe, a significant part of it moved to Gothenburg.

The new Qoros 5 SUV
The new Qoros 5 SUV

Qoros is fighting. Against lousy sales figures that seem to have fallen far short of forecasting. Europe is no longer dreamed of. China is not a good place for unknown brands. The now downwardly corrected predictions still do not fit. For 2015, it should be 3.000 units sold per month in the home market. In the first 7 months it was less than 7.000 vehicles, in October only 1.400. Still far below destination.

Qoros wants to start now with the Qoros 5 SUV. It is the second SUV of the brand and is to bring from March 2016 the turn. 6.000 vehicles per month, of which at least 2.000 Qoros 5 SUV, should find buyers. The Qoros 5 SUV, available only as a front-wheel drive, starts at 23.500 €. Much more expensive than comparable SUVs of Chinese brands, which Qoros tries to justify with higher quality. Start an unknown brand or crash landing? We will see.

For design comparison and Saab's former future only two words:

The Borgward looks like a mixture of Tiguan and Touareg. Not very appealing, just not a Saab ... and I can only concur with the other co-authors about the Chinese boxes, nothing for me. I don't want to miss my 900CV, 9-3CV and 9-5Kombi and keep it for a long time.

Would fit with these Santa Clauses. Business plan of NEVS: Nikolausschlitten is now being built with Ecologically, Biologically Perfect Propulsion (Rudolf). But the 24.12. 2015 would be too late, not in calendar this fall, and some promise NEVS has to make

Wiesmann probably now has a new investor who hopes they are luckier than SAAB.
The business plan of NEVS will be presented at 24.12.2015!
    ... as a Christmas fairy tale ... ..

I actually find the design of the Borgward quite passable. It will certainly not become a style icon like an Isabella. But in contrast to the same SUV from the Far East, it stands out positively. If quality, technology and price are right, it could work with Borgward 2.0. At least I wish it very much for them. And playing the hybrid card makes sense. In the middle class segment there are currently not many manufacturers who offer the technology. So far, the German manufacturers have only "hybridized" their large boxes. The diesel still plays a far too big role there.

As can be seen at the IAA this year, the build quality of the Borgward seemed to be very good, the design has a lot of the Audi Q7 and some Porsche Cayenne.

Since nobody cares about using the name SAAB at the moment, there will be no problem for NEVS if they are ready to launch their new car in 2017. That's my tip, sales will start 2018. So hold on till then.

Stolen basic form and then something Surface Entertainment entered the sheet. Well. This is not really based on the Borgward design. Hansa and so on.

And where is an original from Trollhättan?

Not even the full-bodied business plan announced for Autumn 2015 was timely announced by NEVS.

With the current VW fiasco, the Swedes could easily acquire former VW customers. However, the NEVS troop seems to have fallen directly into the old SAAB practices and all possibilities are therefore passing Trollhättan without any action - this time even without the intervention of big GM! Even I am now at a loss for words - or does NEVS still have something on the pan that could be called a SAAB automobile?

The calendrical autumn goes to 21.12. 11: 44 MEZ. Only as info. So time would still be

      • blank

I would almost wonder if NEVS in the calendar of autumn actually something. Why is NEVS allowed to use the Saab logo on its website? You would think the Saab AB is so slow no matter where your name is used everywhere without permission.

        • blank

My note also referred only to the calendar, nothing else.

NEVS certainly has nothing on the pan. They are the biggest miscast ever.

        Can not agree.
        1. Developing an electric car is more demanding than reaching into the parts shelf. Who knows how far the Phoenix platform has to be reconstructed?
        2. The complete failure of a major investor due to whatever (factory accident, cleanup in China) has NEVS stumbled, but in contrast to Saab under Mueller not overturned. Much smarter acts, or simply better contacts. And _rechtzeitig_ went into the restructuring.
        3. Flexibility in the business model to survive. The development contract from Turkey is great news.

        • blank

The Phoenix platform was designed from the beginning on EV and plug-in hybrid.

What a junk, and then advertise with SAAB. That's the way it is, BAIC has identified and used opportunities, even if I can not find that good. NEVS just gave up. Are they still there or are they already back in hibernation mode?

    • blank

They are still there and busy staff. The communication is poor as always, so everything OK

  • blank

The boxes look like shit, and the Senova is bleak. Instead of using the chance of lower wages for an appreciation, it is simply saved in the usual cheap-China way. The handles. The lousy design. Betting that the impact protection in the doors is gone or weaker? The interior bah.

  • blank

Amazing that BAIC can advertise with the name SAAB without consequences and NEVS has problems with the naming rights….
And the Quoros clearly resembles the Kia Sportage.
