Paul. The increase in performance and the thrill

When you change from 9-3 II to 9-5, it's the ascent to another class of vehicle. It is September, the exit of the Saab friends Saxony has just come to an end. I had brought the 9-3 II to Saxony after being in Frankfurt LED daytime running lights had received.

VW training center. But who cares VW, if you can drive a Saab?

During the trip I was more or less enthusiastic about driving the 9-3 II, because it has a diesel under the bonnet. And diesel has never been my thing. But now, finally, the change. Walnut wood, dark leather, wonderful! The 9-5 exudes seriousness. Even at a slightly older age. Welcome Home…

Paul has thrills for me. As always…

The journey goes in the direction of Frankfurt / Main, first over small country roads. Then over the highway. Several 100 kilometers lie ahead of me, and after a diesel day I'm looking forward to each one of them. But Paul would not be Paul if he did not have some thrill.

Already on the way to the freeway, I noticed that something was wrong. The 9-5 does not run as smoothly and cultivated as usual, more a bit out of round, inharmonious. Paul starts to jerk on the highway. Not dramatic, but noticeable. I look at the navigation system, see the kilometers that lie in front of me ... the worry lines on my forehead deepen. In my mind I go through what has been renewed. Or, the shorter list, which has not been replaced. The only item left is the ignition cassette. It won't ...

The kilometers go by, the Saab is actually a great touring car. He is very serious and fed up on the street. The 19 ″ tires reinforce the impression. The air conditioning is perfect, the seats are super comfortable. When darkness falls, they do H4 H7 lamps a good light, the green cockpit lighting is very pleasant.

If it weren't for this slight, subliminal jerking, everything would be fine. Are we going to run aground? Somewhere in the deepest Saxony or Thuringia. I have stayed in a car for the rest of my life. That was many years ago - back then with my 1972 MGB. Which was not due to the English roadster, but to my inexperience. And it's a different story from a time when there were no cell phones.

But the miles pass, Paul jerks on towards Bavaria, and Bamberg is almost within reach. The optimist in me gains the upper hand, an emergency stop Ralf Muckelbauer is discarded, over Schweinfurt and Würzburg it goes on. In the end, Paul and I arrive home well. Meanwhile relaxed, but also a bit helpless.

The helplessness increases, because the good old Saab with the end of the ride also makes the judder. The rest of the season he runs without problems, also proves to be a loadmaster, in which you can stow two antique leather chairs. A high-utility wagon that has more load capacity than an 9-3 II. He drives as if nothing had happened. Jerk-free, rattle-free, comfortable. Great handling, like a modern car. But good, the suspension is almost completely new.

Hirsch performance upgrade for our Saab?

Only the temperament leaves much to be desired. The 9-5 station wagon is heavy, and in the direct comparison to a Saab 9000 with the same engine quite sluggish. But Saab wanted it that way then. Away from the lightweight, away from the avant-garde of a Saab 9000 that GM must have hated. For the 9-5 is just absolutely reputable, a little Mercedes in a positive sense. This is reflected in consumption. The 10 liters are on average, but not much less.

A friend recently gave his 9-5 a deer performance boost. The sedan is almost unrecognizable, it has become agile and so typical of turbo-saab stupidity. Paul would be fine too.

Only: For Paul's model year supplies Deer no more. Maybe, if we get a budget together again for 2018, would you be persuaded in Ruckstuhl and give the good station wagon a power cure? At least I will try.

Even if Mark and I were only able to achieve a fraction of what we had planned with the Projektsaab in 2017, it is clear that the old station wagon has become an attractive car thanks to many helpers. With a few minor flaws. Like the SID, which only shows no pixel errors in cool temperatures. Or the gear knob, which is no longer really nice.

The Saab spends the next few months in the hangar. For the first time in many years he is allowed to hibernate in the dry. He deserves it. I have time to do a few small things. And in 2018 we are looking for a new owner for him and donate the proceeds to a good cause.

  • I know that kind of thrill. In November 2014 the walking stick on my 9-5 (in Bamberg, by the way) was repaired. After that the Trionic was a bit confused. It probably calibrated itself, but initially the engine speed dropped so far in idle that the engine switched to emergency mode. He didn't go out, but between Frankfurter Kreuz and Rüsselsheim my nerves were also really tickled ...

    Two reboots later the run was then cultivated again as always.

  • In addition to their weight, the 9-5 and 9-3 were also less agile because the Trionic7 was set up differently than the Trionic5. The (perceived) power delivery of the T7 vehicles was somewhat more "mass-compatible". On paper the 9-5 Aero was faster to 100km / h than the 9k Aero, but it felt much faster with the 9k. If only because the maximum torque is applied earlier with the 9k.

    a really nice and great report - we also have a 9-5 with the same engine from 2000. And yes our 9000 from 1997 is much more agile - how do you mean that "Saab wanted it that way back then"?

    Our 9-5 has H7 headlights - the 9000 H1 the old 900 H4 and our 9-3 convertible from 2009 Xenon?

    Is there also a H9 headlight for the 5-4?

    • Of course he has H7. Please excuse the oversight. While Saab relied on innovative lightweight construction in the 9000, the 9-5 got heavier and more conventional. He was, one must not forget, the first rebuilt vehicle during the GM era. The priorities were (given by GM) simply others.

    Again a very exciting and great contribution. Especially the caption at the beginning!

    Tip because of the Pixel Devil, remove the Sid and take out the board. Are only screws and connectors.
    Then heat each solder joint with a small soldering iron. It's just cold solder joints that make the pixels disappear. The solder only has to be heated to the point where it is molecularly reformed and electricity is flowing again.
    Have even read that an iron should be enough.
    In any case, this is cheaper than buying a new one. Just do a half hour job.

    Did that with my successful.
    And yesterday, thanks to the lighting off the radio.

  • Ignition cassette? is not it broken all of a sudden and without advance notice? Just a sudden failure, so it was with me. And the car has of course been left lying. The Swiss yellow angels, TCS, helped me very fast and top notch. When I told him about the failure knew the right thing and brought a detonator with!

    • Ignition cartridges can also die "creeping". The jerking described can be a symptom, for example.

      What was the driving profile or the driven speed like? 10,2L / 100km according to BC seems a bit high to me. In my deer (220PS) 9-5 with 4-speed automatic machine there was always an 8 in front of the decimal point, in CH also a 7, but I usually drove “French” (130km / h) up to 140km / h.

      • I think there was quite a bit of short-haul fuel consumption, and then 180 times on the autobahn. This is where the weight plus low performance is noticeable. A "deer" drives more confidently and not as often at the power limit as the 150 hp engine. In the next few days, with the highway, consumption went down.

        @ Hans S. = The diagnosis is of course the pure exclusion method. Engine was overhauled, turbo is new. With all hoses we should now be through. I hope

    • I did have ignition coils but suddenly I got a jerk when the gas was on the highway, switched off, nothing more, drove about 150km home without anything, two days later when standing still and drove 10km to the next workshop ... then I had candles and Rinsing replaces ...

      For the gear knob and the pixel error, I would look at proxyparts to see if they have something ...

  • Once you're left lying around, you can always and very sensitively listen into your 9-5.

    Performance increase would be quite nice here, Schaltknauf decays slowly since the summer.
