Saab and Subaru at the Essen Motor Show

There comes together what once belonged together. At least for a while Saab and Subaru were connected by GM. The 9-2x is a result of this cooperation, the 9-6x it could have been. If things had not gone differently, GM would not have parted company with Subaru.

Subaru WRX STI, Saab 9000 CSE and Saab 9-3 Aero Cabriolet
Subaru WRX STI, Saab 9000 CSE and Saab 9-3 Aero Cabriolet

Both brands have a lot in common. They have their roots in aircraft construction, and both have always sought a special way beyond well-trodden paths. Boxer engines with their special sound and symmetrical four-wheel drive are the distinctive features of Subaru. Ingenious turbos, Scandinavian design and unusual, innovative ideas characterized Saab.

Almost inevitably it must seem that the Subaru Drivers Club and the 1. German Saab Club on Motor Show sharing a stand in Essen. The Subaru club is contributing a WRX STI, the Saab faction a 9-3 Aero Convertible with viggen Body kit and an 9000 CSE. An exciting mix, and absolutely great vehicles.

There were pictures of the structure yesterday in my mailbox. They are not perfect, because the lighting in the hall is not, the structure is up, and everything has to go quickly. But I think they catch the atmosphere of the evening exhibition hall well. And maybe they make one or the other reader feel like visiting during the next days in Essen.

Saab and Subaru can be found at the 51st Motor Show in Hall 2, Stand D23. The exhibition starts on December 1st and runs until December 9th. November 12th. is designated as a press day, more pictures from Essen will follow on the blog.

  • How cool, SAAB and Subaru! Did you know that first SAAB and then Subaru sponsored Gary Fisher's mountain bike racing team? Another thing the two manufacturers have in common. Another, sad, commonality is that the Gary Fisher brand no longer exists. It's now incorporated into Trek. SAAB and GF were characterized by uncompromising innovation, now guess what kind of bike is next to my SAAB ...

  • The yellow is a Viggen, not an Aero. 😉

    • Is so since noon in the corrected text.

  • I like the combination, with the Subarueuphorie here I feel like driving again a Subaru. The legacy we had was a great car. Unlike a Saab, but just as different

  • I was almost afraid that there would be no saabigen contribution to the fair this year. But thought wrong. The visit is definitely planned towards the end of the fair! An 9-2x would of course have been an absolute dream (was not there even one in Kiel ?!)

    • There are one in Kiel and one in Switzerland. Both are Eros.

  • Interesting information and nice impressions. The yellow is a dream !!!
Unfortunately, it is too far to visit.

  • Great selection, especially the Cab is WOW! Thanks to the club members who spend their free time!

  • What pleasing sights!
Have fun at the booth, interested visitors and a nice exchange ...
    I particularly like the 9000! 🙂
    Saabian greetings!

  • Hello Tom

Thank you for the information regarding the exhibits and the merger of SAAB and Subaru
    at the Motorshow in Essen.
The only thing missing is a real SAAB 9-2 X Aero vintage 2006, the only SAAB 9-2 X Aero in Europe !!
It is one of the last production, so not with the 2005 engine with 2.0L but with the
2.5L turbo engine from the Subaru Impreza WRX and xenon headlamps.

    Greetings from Switzerland
    Fredy
