The Saab 900 - Homage to a historic vehicle as utopia

Why still drive a Saab? A Saab is more than just a car. He is a love object and a statement. The love of beautiful things that extend from art to everyday life and gild life in its little moments.

Saab 900 Cabriolet and its proud owner
Saab 900 Cabriolet and its proud owner

And it is a statement for a sustainable use of the resources of our planet: I use in everyday life bike, bus or tram and for long stretches the train, if necessary, even the plane and drive my two Saab 900 only for special needs and for special occasions , For example, to transport bulky things the white Saab with its huge cargo space of 1,80 m with folded rear seats, or in nice summer weather for pure pleasure the red 900 convertible. Both have completed about 250.000 km, still running like a one and waiting for their official monumental cult status in three years: vintage cars.

At first I had only one Saab 900, just this practical with the big tailgate, black, noble, bought 1992. Then, a few years ago, there was an unfortunate experience with an SUV whose explorer driver hit my car when I had to stop because of a left turn in oncoming traffic. Total loss. After a month's tears, I searched for a replacement and finally found it, just not in black, but in white. My dears said: oh, you have chosen the new fashion color! Well, that's the way it is.

But searching in the utility market is somehow addictive and I could not refrain from rummaging through the corresponding websites. And then a red convertible 900 jumped in my eye, I was seduced to a meeting - and could not resist the elegance and beauty of this vehicle just. So now I have just two Saab 900.

They arouse admiration and respect - and yes, they somehow carry out a socio-political program that my friends and acquaintances understand far better than a verbal sustainability sermon. To some extent, the schizophrenia of the mobility policy of the past decades is palpably clear at the two Saabs: with environmental and energy-saving arguments, we drivers are always lured onto a wrong track again and again, which ends in a dead end. With the argument of lower gas mileage and a scrapping premium, we were tempted to scrap our cars early and buy a new car - resulting in significant additional consumption of resources and energy in the total.

With the lower diesel prices, we were seduced to convert from petrol to diesel, again to buy a new car. Meanwhile, all these cars are equipped with a lot of electronics, which has a significantly increased consumption of rare earths result. And in recent years, we were then the greater road safety by an increased overview in the SUV promoted, so in turn a new vehicle due - and now is the switch to an e-car to ... For a long time I had the compassionate glances of my dear acquaintances about me let go when I drove up with my old Saab. I was someone who did not want to understand how much more sensible it is to drive a car with only 5 liters of fuel consumption than the 9 liters that my two darlings swallowed.

Meanwhile, the attitude of my environment begins to change slowly. I am now in the eyes of others a lover of beautiful cars - while their cars are downgraded to disposable items and their owners are degenerate to consumers, to consumers who have to boost the economy - and quite obviously the fantastic slogans of the major brands of the auto industry and their economic political exaggeration have gone to the wall. The reduction in fuel consumption is largely faked.

The new, supposedly so energy-saving car (in whose production but so much resources and energy had been plugged), turns out to be a fine material dirt spinner and now falls to the diesel driving ban. And the new comfort of a high seat and good overview in the new SUV even calls for a larger garage, many parking garages and public parking are disturbingly small and the streets of the old city centers are too narrow ...

With the next demand impulse, the e-car, some already recognize the horse foot: again with the environmental argument the change is stimulated on an e-car, whose turn soon departure due to the diverse over-use (power grid, rare metals) one already dawning on the horizon.

My rushed environment has lightened its moneybox many times and helped our economy - while still driving my two Saab 900s, with an ecofriendly and loving driving pleasure, embedded in a knowledgeable fan community.
They have their place as emotionally charged objects in my life, to which I have a relationship like a pet. Now, as I approach my acquaintances, my Saab is watched with a certain respectful interest and gives thoughtful expressions, all the more so when I casually mention my view of the history of auto-mobility. Especially nice: every now and then I am asked to take a ride.

I'm curious to see when it's time for me to get a sustainability badge for my traffic movements and the role that my two beloved Saab are still playing ...

Thanks to Helga Fassbinder for this Saab story! How is it in everyday life with an older Saab? What do you experience, how do friends, colleagues and the family react? With indulgence, enthusiasm or compassion? How do you keep the Saab alive, what do you do with spare parts and workshops, how do you optimize or restore the old Swedes?

A broad topic for the "Saab stories 2019!". Challenging, but also interesting. How does it look with the fans, how strong does the Saab heart beat in everyday life? Write it to us, it's worth it!

  • Super!! Great story.
Even the depiction of how much the so-called consumer is misused as a "milking cow" by politics and industry (and willingly abused) can not be better described.
Two months ago my daughter got an 900 SoftTurbo (* 92, scarab green, nice condition) for 18. Birthday given. The reaction was ambivalent. Optics above all doubt, but somehow quite mechanical in driving, although she knows practically nothing other than Saab since birth. But 9-3 III and 9-5 I of the parents are clearly more modern and the driving school car anyway. That shapes.
However, the reaction of their classmates was amazing, some wanted to have a trial seat or just listen to the sound, one of them immediately offered his BMW for exchange ....
The coronation, however, was one of her teachers, who, when he got wind of the balance, said: "Whoever does not like such a thing has forfeited its right to exist."
    Wow, I thought. Notable teacher.
But it also shows SAAB LEBT

  • Dear Mrs. Fassbinder,

Your SAAB story does not just testify to a personal preference for a certain brand, but also to a far above-average ability to survey complex contexts and deal with them positively (within their own sphere of influence) ...

Please expand your sphere of activity. Would you stand for election as the next Chancellor candidate, you and your party would have my vote.

  • Hey there!
Full approval also from me. Unfortunately, these articles probably read only already convinced SAABists.

    • Then the article looks just inside ...

Not every SAAB knows how and why she or he could or should manage his everyday life without a new car and thus without brand change. Above are very good answers ...

    • Yes, that's what I was afraid of - so I put it on 'www.academia.edu' and on 'facebook' with a little foreword:
"This text is on the one hand a very personal homage to a car type of the past - but it is also a transport policy statement: starting from a massive criticism of the mobility policy of the German Federal Government (the other European governments are not inferior), he is a call for consideration our petroleum-consuming car fleet as a cultural legacy of the past, which in its well-preserved and beautiful specimens is a sort of living museum, and a transformation from everyday mobility to public transport. "

  • Beautifully written, thank you! And the three years to the H-mark the two Saab quite loose. Thus, then the plaque question would be clarified.
Have fun and a good ride!

  • Thanks for this post!
I seriously wonder how long people still allow themselves to be fooled by economic interests as environmental protection ...

  • Hats off that is really sustainable action.

I definitely can not keep up with the age of the car.

My two 9-5 sedans will be 20 this year. Both V6 gasoline engines (the "non-cooked"), which run over 80% only long-haul. The real consumption is just above 9l. One had to do a little more in the last 2 years. But now is in great shape and certainly goes without much effort in October by the next HU. The other is rusty better there and has just received new TÜV. Even if I had to invest about 2TEUR per car in the coming years, it would still be more economical than getting a newer car for some kind of car.

Everything works for both cars and I'm always happy when I can hear my old music cassettes in really amazing quality. From 15 to 25 years ago, I spent months and months playing tapes and now I enjoy the kick back.

Oh and I almost forgot that my wife, who can drive only due to a disability only automatic, with both cars perfectly well. Meanwhile, she parks better than me and that without any "Park Becker Schicki-Micky".

Older cars just keep better young ..

  • Well written! Nice story!

    I look similar:
An old used car is in the whole but always more economical and especially safe environmentally friendly than constantly new cars with the latest "environmental" technology!

I hope to be able to drive my current Saab at least 10-15 years (like more).

  • A really great story, topics such as sustainability, understatement and nonsensical (environmental) policy in connection with SAAB have probably never been summarized so well in one text. Hats off, really terrific written! Still fun after the third time.

  • What is generally critical with new cars:
To make a car no matter which, lots of co2 accumulate. With 2l less consumption, I really have to drive a lot to save the co2 again, that went for the production on it. In general, the used is thus better for the environment as a new car to buy.

  • Well formulated and unfortunately very true. All that is praised as environmental protection is ultimately based on even more consumption. What a mistake!

    • Many thanks for these great, so concise yet respectful words, Mrs. Fassbinder (or Helga, if you meet personally at the gas station and once again this saabige "a friend to meet, you have never seen before" experienced) ,

The text is not something that can be used to accuse those who could do better than they do (there is so much knowledge and pseudo-wisdom in this world on the way, and in Germany so many people seem so soft, so lemming and thoughtless , yes sometimes really stupid-naive to "act" - how else is it explainable that you are after heavy loss of value, fraud on the preserved car, an anti-social appearance of the manufacturer in court proceedings and and and then * again * an apparatus from the same manufacturer buys in which even the hands are rubbed, because 'consumer' after the self-induced diesel thing and thus launched new "environmental premiums" to reward the betrayed again and again money to the fraudster and again buys a mogul product - where otherwise it is so obvious (okay, in many many areas - and there too: the knowledge is there and more accessible than j e before, but it is not applied and made wisdom)?).

For us, it's also a mixture of a self-surmising conviction that the (900, 9000, even 9-5) are just good cars, and that the artificially hyped new only the new willing - without by itself Being able to speak and convince without real added value - refuses to drive the chosen SAAB. We do not make that a victim of a self-imposed ideology, we do that as a deliberate "culprit", precisely because the cars are really good, and - these were words I heard yesterday at a workshop with SAAB enthusiastic screwdriver - because they * honest * are. Real, honest cars that were not just about putting some "product" for "farming" into a world that did not ask for it (but which is said to have that ...), but where the conviction a good, honest and driving for the relief (not the blind, but the one that leaves more concentration for the attentive self-driving) of the driver constructed and manufactured car driving impulses were.
I think that was something special about SAAB, and over the years in the world has also diluted with other manufacturers:
There were some who wanted to build really good cars with the drive to build really good cars. So simple, so genuine, so honest.
Too bad that it has become so dishonest in the automotive industry - and if we're not careful, it's faster on interpersonal relationships than we even know.
      So intentionally, so brought about.
Mindful - and deliberately drive and get good cars.

    • The phenomenon (the [continuing] loyalty of the deceived) also bothers me ...

There is still an irrational brand or at least corporate loyalty to the Iberian, Czech or German "chariots of the people". If it were only about the pollutant emissions of a diesel, I would have fewer question marks in mind ...

But if a good friend of a young gasoline engine (if you can classify a car with an oil consumption of 1 L / 100 Km still as petrol) after a long and unsuccessful dispute but actually replaced by the next new car of the same group and showed me proudly , then I'm finally at a loss.

At the same time, however, I succeed less and less in attributing black money to anyone else. And like a SAAB (EZ 2019 / MY 2020) would beat in this field of tension from consumers, industry and political guidelines and the multiple fronts within this whimsical triptych, I do not know and we'll never know ...

If we are all honest, then the honesty of our SAABs has something to do with the grace of early birth. That they can not even embarrass the recent political nonsense and the recent trends.

The disputes about the "right" brand have long since often and often bitterly and mercilessly led our fathers and grandmothers. Today they would all still be in their arms, with their analogous and honest beetles, BMWs, SAABs, Volvos, ducks and whatever ...

In view of the current dishonesty of politics and zeitgeist too understandable. Just a thought on the edge ...
