Why still drive a Saab? A Saab is more than just a car. He is a love object and a statement. The love of beautiful things that extend from art to everyday life and gild life in its little moments.
And it is a statement for a sustainable use of the resources of our planet: I use in everyday life bike, bus or tram and for long stretches the train, if necessary, even the plane and drive my two Saab 900 only for special needs and for special occasions , For example, to transport bulky things the white Saab with its huge cargo space of 1,80 m with folded rear seats, or in nice summer weather for pure pleasure the red 900 convertible. Both have completed about 250.000 km, still running like a one and waiting for their official monumental cult status in three years: vintage cars.
At first I had only one Saab 900, just this practical with the big tailgate, black, noble, bought 1992. Then, a few years ago, there was an unfortunate experience with an SUV whose explorer driver hit my car when I had to stop because of a left turn in oncoming traffic. Total loss. After a month's tears, I searched for a replacement and finally found it, just not in black, but in white. My dears said: oh, you have chosen the new fashion color! Well, that's the way it is.
But searching in the utility market is somehow addictive and I could not refrain from rummaging through the corresponding websites. And then a red convertible 900 jumped in my eye, I was seduced to a meeting - and could not resist the elegance and beauty of this vehicle just. So now I have just two Saab 900.
They arouse admiration and respect - and yes, they somehow carry out a socio-political program that my friends and acquaintances understand far better than a verbal sustainability sermon. To some extent, the schizophrenia of the mobility policy of the past decades is palpably clear at the two Saabs: with environmental and energy-saving arguments, we drivers are always lured onto a wrong track again and again, which ends in a dead end. With the argument of lower gas mileage and a scrapping premium, we were tempted to scrap our cars early and buy a new car - resulting in significant additional consumption of resources and energy in the total.
With the lower diesel prices, we were seduced to convert from petrol to diesel, again to buy a new car. Meanwhile, all these cars are equipped with a lot of electronics, which has a significantly increased consumption of rare earths result. And in recent years, we were then the greater road safety by an increased overview in the SUV promoted, so in turn a new vehicle due - and now is the switch to an e-car to ... For a long time I had the compassionate glances of my dear acquaintances about me let go when I drove up with my old Saab. I was someone who did not want to understand how much more sensible it is to drive a car with only 5 liters of fuel consumption than the 9 liters that my two darlings swallowed.
Meanwhile, the attitude of my environment begins to change slowly. I am now in the eyes of others a lover of beautiful cars - while their cars are downgraded to disposable items and their owners are degenerate to consumers, to consumers who have to boost the economy - and quite obviously the fantastic slogans of the major brands of the auto industry and their economic political exaggeration have gone to the wall. The reduction in fuel consumption is largely faked.
The new, supposedly so energy-saving car (in whose production but so much resources and energy had been plugged), turns out to be a fine material dirt spinner and now falls to the diesel driving ban. And the new comfort of a high seat and good overview in the new SUV even calls for a larger garage, many parking garages and public parking are disturbingly small and the streets of the old city centers are too narrow ...
With the next demand impulse, the e-car, some already recognize the horse foot: again with the environmental argument the change is stimulated on an e-car, whose turn soon departure due to the diverse over-use (power grid, rare metals) one already dawning on the horizon.
My rushed environment has lightened its moneybox many times and helped our economy - while still driving my two Saab 900s, with an ecofriendly and loving driving pleasure, embedded in a knowledgeable fan community.
They have their place as emotionally charged objects in my life, to which I have a relationship like a pet. Now, as I approach my acquaintances, my Saab is watched with a certain respectful interest and gives thoughtful expressions, all the more so when I casually mention my view of the history of auto-mobility. Especially nice: every now and then I am asked to take a ride.
I'm curious to see when it's time for me to get a sustainability badge for my traffic movements and the role that my two beloved Saab are still playing ...
Thanks to Helga Fassbinder for this Saab story! How is it in everyday life with an older Saab? What do you experience, how do friends, colleagues and the family react? With indulgence, enthusiasm or compassion? How do you keep the Saab alive, what do you do with spare parts and workshops, how do you optimize or restore the old Swedes?
A broad topic for the "Saab stories 2019!". Challenging, but also interesting. How does it look with the fans, how strong does the Saab heart beat in everyday life? Write it to us, it's worth it!
