Anyone looking for a representative Scandinavian limousine in the late 1980s had a choice for the first time. As before, he could buy a conservative Volvo. Or he ordered an innovative Saab 9000 CD Turbo.
The 9000 was the nemesis of the big Gothenburg brand, at least in the early years. Saab poached in the luxury class segment, for the first time, and very successfully. The 9000 CD had a hard time with the real fans of the brand. They preferred the hatchback to the sedan. A clientele that would otherwise have signed with BMW, Mercedes or Volvo grabbed the deal.
