Unpacked! 1:12 Scale - Citroën DS 19 (1959) by Norev

Is the collector's scale 1:18 or 1:43 too ordinary for you? You are right, because there are alternative model cars in 1:12. This turns the miniature into a sculpture, a decorative element and an eye-catcher. It gets really impressive when Norev takes on the Citroën DS.

An automotive work of art, an icon of France. On a scale of 1:12, it is suitable for the office, living room and reception. Is that still a model car, or is that already art? We unpacked the DS.

Norev has been launching larger-scale DS models in different colors for some time now. The current edition, as previously limited to 600 copies worldwide, is the fourth or fifth model in this series.

Steven Jobs once told Apple that the packaging of a product is extremely important for the effect it has on the buyer. Norev has also taken this as a model and delivers the DS in a simple box that can definitely be described as a designer piece. The DS, taken from a bird's eye view, is viewed with some anticipation on top of the packaging.

Unpacking is easy. Unlike many other providers, you can feel the routine of a large model car brand. Two handles made of white cardboard allow me to comfortably maneuver the DS's Styrofoam packaging out of the box. The two auxiliary handles can then be sounded out in no time at all. In order to completely defoliate the DS, you don't need a screwdriver to loosen annoying transport locks.

You simply open the styrofoam packaging. And then there she is. In full beauty and greatness. Almost 40 centimeters in length, that's quite a word.

The Citroën DS 19 (1959) comes in rose gray and purple, as Norev writes. The processing is flawless. Forget the problems that all small suppliers who have their products made to order in China are currently having. Paintwork and finish are impeccable, as is the interior. A plaque on the floorpan tells the limited edition vehicle number and there's nothing to complain about.

Ah yes, tin! Norev traditionally relies on metal instead of resin as the material, which is now pleasantly noticed.

From a purely visual point of view, the DS 19 is just fun and makes you think about where it could best be set up.

beauty and presence

But there are also things that one or the other interested party might miss. Anyone who associates more details with the 1:12 scale could be disappointed. Norev saves escapades such as textile inserts or doors and hoods that can be opened. On the other hand, one discovers the manufacturer's signature on the headlights at third glance. In general, the result is rock solid and precise.

For the really big Citroën flagship, Norev demands in his own Online-Shop, with free delivery throughout Europe, €145,00. Considering so much beauty and presence, that's absolutely fine. With other providers on the net you save a few €, but pay the freight costs.

By the way, the collector's value of the 1:12 Collectors series is quite high. 600 pieces as a limited edition, that would be quite a lot in the Saab world. In the Citroën galaxy, which is enormous in size, that's just stardust. Earlier 1:12 models of the DS, if offered at all, are now traded for around €600.

To make the decision difficult for collectors, the French offer a second one limited DS online. The poetic name of the paint combination is delphinium blue and white.

    1 : 12 and sheet metal ...

That's beautiful. It's probably a sculpture - both for the original and for this model, which seems surprisingly inexpensive to me.

In order to bring it, the sculpture, to its best advantage, you should actually use a gallery base. 40 x 40 cm in cross-section (makes 56,6 diagonals) and 110 to 120 cm high. This as glossy white as possible. There it parks (diagonally) safely and comes into its own.

    Great model ! !

To put it in Nordic terms: not bad at all (an expression for a higher level of enthusiasm than “not bad”)!

oh ... there used to be a lot of very nice cars ....
(and what used to be considered “huge” would now mostly only be a “small car”)

Something in 1:12 would also be missing. The DS is great, but currently I don't see a Saab at Norev. Maybe it will come, I would give it to myself 😉
