Lancia had long since found refuge under the umbrella of the Fiat group when the luxury class project began together with Saab. Even under the Fiat direction, the brand still enjoyed greater freedom, which, however, was lost more and more in the following years. Did the Italians see the partner Saab as a possible rival in the joint project?

Probably not. Because whether the 9000 of the Swedish upper class newcomers would be successful was not certain. Lancia, on the other hand, was traditionally considered more Italian Mercedes and was mentioned in the car magazines on the same train as the people from Stuttgart. The brand was still firmly in the saddle and potential climbers had a hard time even back then.

Audi, like Saab on the way to the top, had achieved initial successes but was not yet accepted and fought hard to climb the ladder.

In addition to the famous turbo engine, which was primarily dedicated to the home market, Lancia offered the flagship theme 6V for export. The six-cylinder should further cement its position in the luxury class and compete with Mercedes.
