The new Saab 9-5:
Beginning of a new era for Saab
- Progressive Scandinavian design is based on the Aero X and the brand heritage
- Driver-centered concept conveys outstanding sporting driving experience
- Responsible performance for highest safety and sustainability
- Modern Saab with many high-tech elements
Noble, progressive and unmistakable Saab - the all-new 9-5 sedan takes the Saab brand into a new era. With outstanding design and state-of-the-art technology, the characteristic new top-of-the-range model brings a breath of fresh air to the class of premium saloons.
The new 9-5 sedan, with its clear, sculptural form, unites the typical Scandinavian design with the Saab aviation heritage, which is particularly reflected in the sweeping shape of the windshield. Formally taken over by the award-winning Aero X Concept, the front of the car and the muscular, low-lying body give the car an offensive, expressive appearance that will also characterize future models.
The many high-tech elements include: an aircraft-like head-up information display (Pilot HUD), adaptive light (bi-xenon smart beam), adaptive cruise control, the adaptive Saab DriveSense suspension with real-time damper control, keyless entry and engine start, three-zone climate control, dynamic park pilot and the technologically advanced Saab XWD all-wheel drive system with electronic limited slip differential eLSD.
The drive portfolio consists exclusively of turbo engines. It starts with the 1,6-liter turbo as an entry-level unit and consistently continues the Saab rightsizing strategy. At the heart of this strategy is the development of highly efficient and relatively small turbo engines that deliver such responsible performance. Saab also offers three fuel alternatives for the new 9-5 - petrol, diesel and bioethanol E85. The turbo diesel engine lowers the CO2Emissions on model 139 grams per kilometer.
"With this car, our brand is entering a new era," says Jan Åke Jonsson, CEO of Saab Automobile AB. "We have created a progressive and distinctive model by further developing and harmonizing our roots, such as progressive Scandinavian design, the emphasis on the sporty driving experience and responsible performance. This applies to the new 9-5 as well as to all future Saab products. "
Forward-looking design that does not deny its origins - this sums up the visual impact of the new Saab 9-5 sedan. "We have given our classic brand design a fresh, very modern look," explains Simon Padian, Saab Brand Design Chief. "In addition, there are visual references to our latest concept vehicles such as the Aero X, which are inspired by the typical Scandinavian design and aviation heritage of our brand."
The "face" of the new 9-5 is dominated by the low-drawn radiator grille, which is bounded laterally by the characteristic ice block headlights. The window fronts stretch like a closed band around the entire vehicle and look like a piece. The subtle dark A and B pillars make a significant contribution to the Saab's cockpit look. If you look closely, the proportions of the windscreen and the roof evoke memories of the classic Saab 900.
The new 9-5 makes a strong and powerful impression from every perspective. The "organic sculpture" of its low-lying body combines clear, flowing lines with a naturally curved, curvy profile. Brand-typical design features find their expression in the characteristic "hockey stick" beltline, the strong C-pillars and the smooth surface of the hull. The large logo in the center of the radiator grille also stands for the pronounced, self-confident design language of Saab.
The dynamic character of the new saloon is characterized in particular by the sloping roofline. It flows into the pronounced C-pillars, which frame the slightly recessed rear window. The gently flared fenders close with the tires and thus transfer the energy of the body optically to the wheels. Below the flat tailgate, a continuous, red light band connects the tail lights in the typical ice block design.
The proportions of the new Saab 9-5 thus leave the traditional, three-piece sedan silhouette, without the hatchback line of the typical four-door coupe to match.
The simple forms of interior design reflect the clarity of the body design. Compared to its predecessor, the interior of the new 9-5 has grown: Both driver and front passenger as well as rear passengers enjoy more legroom. The selection of materials and materials used, their processing and the feel of the controls represent the premium aspiration of the new sedan.
Saab is typical - and yet in a completely new design - is the driver-centered cockpit. The deep center console curves arcuately at a shallow angle towards the driver and merges into the instrument panel, the upper end of which forms the cleverly integrated ventilation zone. One of the most retarded main displays is a tachometer in the form of an altimeter - taken from the Aero X Concept and reminiscent of the Saab aviation heritage. The instruments for the driver including the head-up display (Pilot HUD) in the windshield predominantly display the Saab's typical green illumination and convey a fresh and spatial presentation. The ignition remains between the front seats in the gearshift and is now operated by the start / stop button.
The range of infotainment options includes a high-quality Harman Kardon surround sound audio system as well as an eight-inch navigation system with a hard disk that provides roadmap space and other 10 GB music files. The large center console offers plenty of storage space as well as USB, AUX and 12 volt connection for portable electronic devices.
The rear passengers have their own audio access and can also watch DVDs. The ports and volume controls are located on the rear spout of the center console, fold-out screens are attached to the back of the front seats. Headphones with and without cable are available for carefree listening pleasure. In addition to dual-zone climate control for driver and front passenger, the rear is also equipped with dual ventilation and independent temperature / fan option.
In the street
Innovative suspension technologies enable sporty, agile handling, which is unusual for a car of this size. The Saab XWD technology-leading all-wheel drive system is already available in the Saab 9-3 and is available for the two-liter gasoline engine and BioPower as well as for the 2.8 V6 Turbo. In addition, adaptive suspension control Saab DriveSense with individual adjustment options, the adaptive bi-xenon light Smart Beam and an adaptive cruise control are available for all models. Depending on engine power, three different chassis designs are available ex works, each including Sport mode.
Saab stands for over 30 years of experience with turbocharging. The drive portfolio of the new 9-5 therefore only includes turbo units with six-speed gearboxes and is continuing to systematically develop the brand-typical rightsizing strategy.
For the four-cylinder engines, customers can choose between an 132 kW (180 PS) 1,6-liter turbo gasoline engine, or an 2,0-liter turbo petrol engine with 162 kW (220 PS). The 2.8 V6 Turbo top unit features 221 kW (300 PS) and maximum torque of 400 Newton meters; It is only supplied in conjunction with Saab XWD. An E85-designed 2,0-liter BioPower engine is also available. A strong turbo diesel with 118 kW (160 PS) of only 139 grams of CO2 per kilometer and a powerful 140 kW (190 PS) 2,0-liter two-stage turbo diesel engine with 400Nm torque completes the engine range. The technologically advanced Saab XWD all-wheel drive system is also available for the 190 PS two-liter turbocharged diesel engine.
